Let’s Get the Momentum Rolling

Everyone is aiming for the ‘perfect body’ but not many people manage to achieve it. I have coached many people and only small percentage of people managed to complete their workout routine. Of course, there are multiple reasons and excuses for not completing the routine, some is understandable like lost of income, death in family, car-accident, etc but I’d say that the majority of the excuse is commitment and motivation.

Find your “Why”

No one starts a project just for the fun of it. There should be a good reason why you’re starting anything, especially a new workout routine. You need to figure out your goal.

Are you doing it for someone special? Are you fed-up of being bullied when you were a kid? Are you doing it to be live longer so that you could spend more quality time with your kids and family? Was there a death in your family due to obesity or heart related health issue? Whatever your reason it, make it good and solid.

In my experience and observation, if you’re aiming to transform yourself because you want to get more attention from girls or guys, then your ‘why’ is not strong enough. I have seen many young adult men who starting working out for that specific reason and when they manage to find someone special, they started slacking.

For me, I started working out because I was sick and tired of being bullied, not taken seriously by my peers and I had low self esteem. I was made fun of all the time for being the weak, scrawny dorky kid in high school. So when I turned 20 years old, I made it a resolution to change my body.

Keep on Moving

If you’ve a solid ‘why’, then you’re more likely to stick through the workout program. You know yourself more than anybody else, so if you think commitment is an issue, then you might want to consider a short term workout program instead of the intensive 90 day program like P90X. Try something like 10 Min Trainer (10 min per day, 30 day program) or Slim in 6 (6 weeks program). Although Insanity Asylum is only a 30 day program, I do not recommend it to any newbies unless they’ve done a round of P90X or Insanity.

Commitment is really not an issue. It’s all about making the first step. If your car breaks down in the middle of the street, you’d need to exert tremendous force at the very beginning to move the car. But as you go on, the car moves faster and faster and you just need a little force to keep the momentum rolling. This is the same concept with working out!

For those who are doing P90X, Insanity, Turbo Fire, or anything that is longer than 10 min: if you’re having one of those days when you don’t feel like pushing play, tell yourself that you are going to do just the warm up of the program, about 5-10 min only. Go from there. If you feel like you could continue, then keep on moving. If you still feel sluggish, unmotivated and lack of energy, then you could stop if you want to – 5 or 10 min of workout is better than nothing! But what would happen is, when you start doing the warm up, your body is waking up and you’re feeling more energized to do the workout. Before you know it, you’re almost to the end of the workout.

The hardest part of exercising is to push play. In reality, that part takes the least amount of energy, but your mind tells you otherwise. Fight it and you will succeed.
