Grow Those Pecs!
Lately, people have been complimenting on my chest and asking me what my secret is. A lot of people have been speculating that I have been doing a lot of bench presses and keep asking how often I’m doing it and what is my my max bench. The truth is, to have nicely defined and developed pecs, you cannot rely on bench presses alone.
When I turned 20 years old, I knew that I needed to do something when I was at 5’9 and barely weighed 105 lbs. I discovered Power 90 and did the workouts for 2 years, also mixing it with other routines that I learned from my friends. Then, I took few classes in kinesiology and did pure traditional weight lifting throughout my senior year in college. The result – I was buff, but wasn’t really cut. I have good chest and benching 200+ lbs but reached plateau fast. Of course now, those who know me know that I have been doing P90X consistently for over 3 years now. The chest routine in P90X ONLY involves pushups – no weights. But can you actually grow your chest with just pushups?
A few days ago, Men’s Health published an article on “How to Do the Perfect Pushups” (click for article) . One sentence that grab my attention:
“Researchers recently discovered that performing pushups as quickly as you can is one of the best ways to build explosive upper-body strength, according to The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. This pushup method was more effective than doing plyometric pushups (think: clapping between each pushup), and fall pushups, where you drop from a kneeling position and try to push your way back up to the starting position.”
So pushups are the best way to build strength, and imagine if you combine pushups with bench presses? That is exactly what I’ve been doing the past 3-4 rounds of P90X. You can read more here: http://rippedlikenick.com/the-plan/how-to-gain-muscle-mass-with-p90x/
Of course, don’t expect a miracle and that your chest would grow as big as Arnold or Jay Cutler. It takes hard work, patience and commitment. But wouldn’t it be worth it knowing you’re doing it naturally?
